The drugmaker said on Tuesday that it would buy the rights to Viagra from Pfizer Inc, the world's largest maker of Viagra, as part of a deal that will help strengthen its anti-impotence treatment patent.
Viagra, the world's second-biggest drug, had already been on the market and has been available for as little as a day in the United States since it launched on May 1. Pfizer said the sale marks a significant transaction for the drugmaker, which has invested about $1.6 billion in the venture since it launched in late 2015.
Pfizer shares rose 1.3 percent, to $34.80 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Viagra's patent for impotence treatments has been on the market for five years, but it is now scheduled for review by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
Pfizer will have about $1.6 billion in cash and a share of the new Viagra division of the drugmaker.
Shares of the company were trading at $34.50.
The deal comes as the drugmaker said the sale marks a significant transaction for its business.
